Natural ways to reduce menstrual cramps

Menstrual cramps- a pain that we have to suffer from every month. And, we take all sorts of medications during our periods to get some relief from this excruciating pain. While some might not get those intense cramps, for others it can get unbearable.

Although there are medicines that can help you get relief from menstrual cramps, they could have some adverse effects in the long run. I try to avoid popping painkillers as much as possible & that is why I always turn to natural remedies for relief.

So, I have put together some natural ways that have helped me during my periods and, believe me they work!

1. CHAMOMILE TEA

A steaming cup of Chamomile tea can work wonders for not just reducing the pain but also improving your overall health as well. Although it is not recommended for menstrual cramps per se but It is an effective remedy for a sound sleep which somehow helps with all the fatigue that comes with periods. I have a cup of this tea everyday right before sleeping and it has certainly worked for me.

2. HOT WATER BAG

A heating pad or hot water bag is another way to control those unbearable muscle spasms and quite an effective one. Heat therapy is a proven method to reduce menstrual cramps and it works all the time. If you do not have a heating pad, then a hot water bath or hot towels can be a good alternative.

3. CAROM SEEDS

Carom seeds are indeed a blessing when you want to get some respite from the severe period pain. This magical herb is on my go-to list during my periods and trust me it can be the best friend you need when it comes to dealing with menstrual cramps. I prepare a concoction of carom seeds and jaggery where all you gotta do is :

  • Soak few carom seeds overnight
  • Take one tablespoon of these seeds and a little jaggery- boil this mix in a half glass of water.
  • Keep boiling the mix until the water is reduced to half.

I consume it every morning on an empty stomach and it has worked really well for me.

4. MORE MOVEMENT

Rest is often advised during periods and this is why the idea of Period Leave has come to the fore lately. However, for me resting at one place somehow worsens the pain. Over the years I have realized I feel better and at ease when I walk more or do more physical activity. Maybe because movement aids in better blood flow, hence less cramps. So, during my periods I try to move  and work as much as possible or even exercise to keep the pain at bay. Plus working is a good distraction!

5. EAT MORE FRUITS & VEGGIES

Bloating can further aggravate the menstrual cramps making the pain unbearable. The best bet is to eat light during periods. Avoid caffeine as much as you can. Do not eat oily or greasy foods. I try to keep as much fruits, raw veggies and warm soup in my diet, at least during the first two days. A little change in your eating habits sure does help.

These are the natural ways that have always worked for me. Do you have something else you want to add to the list? Or are you planning to try something on this list? Let me know your thoughts!
